HIKING, NATURE & PHOTOGRAPHY
Temagami and our vast area of Crown Land offers
endless trails for hiking, observing nature and wildlife. Photography can
attempt to capture the Near North and all it's beauty.
Caribou Mountain has a lookout with a
breathtaking view of the of the village and northeast arm of Lake Temagami.
The 100' Temagami Fire Tower stands on the summit of the mountain 400' above
the town and 1300' above sea level. It is the highest point on Yonge St.
(Hwy 11). The cupola at the top commands an amazing 360° view in excess of
40 km.
Finlayson Point Provincial Park is located 1 km
south of the town of Temagami, situated on Lake Temagami. A small museum
features displays of historic logging artifacts, old tools, and locally
found fossils and minerals.
The Ferguson Trail is located at the north end
of Lake Temagami near Sandy Inlet and can also be accessed from the Red
Squirrel Road or by water. This trail features a climb up Ferguson Mountain
to a height 123 meters above Lake Temagami. Both Maple Mountain and the
Ishpatina Ridge (Ontario's highest point) are visible from the summit. The
trail system runs south to Kokoko Lake for those desiring an extended hike.
The White Bear Forest was declared a
conservation reserve on July 4, 1997. Of the known remaining stands of
old-growth white pine forest it is the sixth largest. One of the unique
things about the White Bear Forest is that you don't need to hike into a
remote area or be flown many miles to explore its depths. It is perhaps one
of the most easily accessible of the remaining large stands of old-growth
pine. It consists of 1242 hectares of old-growth forest with hiking trails
that begin just east of Temagami.
The White Bear Forest has 28 km of trails that
vary in difficulty and length for those who wish to explore them. Some
portions of trail go through the very heart of the old-growth forest where
there are trees up to 350 years old. That means that you couldn't put your
arms around some of them if you tried - not with a diameter of over 1 meter!
Most of the trail system travels through an expanse that has never been
logged, mined, or disturbed by man.
